The state of the Stockport hospitalwas amajor local issue dur- ing the General Elec- tion campaign. Election night saw the Liberal Demo- crats take both Hazel Grove and Cheadle from theConservatives as part of the party’s national resurgence. Labour successfully defended its Stockport seatwith an increased majority as the Con- servatives were wiped from thepoliticalmap in GreaterManchester. NewLiberalDemocrat MPsTomMorrison, who wonCheadle, andLisa Smart, who took the HazelGrove seat, have written to thenewhealth secretaryWesStreeting about the “appalling state”of thebuildingsat SteppingHillHospital. On their first day in Parliament, they called for “an immediate plan to address the years of failure to invest in the buildings, leading to the current state of thehospital”. They told theminis- ter: “Last year theOut- patientsBDepartment was condemnedandhas been demolished, whilst inMarch the hospital’s IntensiveCareUnitwas temporarily close due to a serious leak coming through the ceiling.” LisaSmartsaid: “This is about making sure that in future residents can go toSteppingHill, ‘Hospital is our priority’ MPs demand urgent action on Stepping Hill andknow that theircare won’tbecompromisedby thestateof thebuildings. “We want a positive relationship with the new health secretary, andwehope thatweget a response that shows the new government take this as seriously as wedo. We’lldowhatever it takes to ensure that SteppingHill gets the investment itneeds.”The MPsalso invited thenew health secretary to visit the site.TomMorrison added: “I was elected with a clearmandate – get thegovernment to fix SteppingHillHospital.
