As well as receiving their Records of Achievement containing academic certificates and hard-earned Duke of Edinburgh awards, 68 accolades were presented to the pupils for ‘effort leading to progress’ across the vari- ous subject areas, with a winner and several pupils highly commended in each category. Throughout the prize giving cere- mony several special honours were also bestowed. Presented to the pupil who achieved the best GCSE results, Luke Edwards received the Year 11 Trophy, after securing five grade 9s, two grade 8s and one grade 7. As a result of his impressive academic success Luke, fromPrestbury, secured a place at Fallibroome Academy where he studies biology, chemistry, maths and further maths at A Level. The Philip Monk Shield, awarded to the pupil who has made the most pro- found progress throughout the Senior School, was presented to Isaac Inwood. Following a unanimous decision by the judges, Isaac was recognised both academically and in the world of sport, notably for his long-jumping success. Matt Carling received the Hanson Plate award and the Sawas Trophy, presented to a pupil or pupils who have demonstrated ‘active and enthusiastic participation and contribution to the life of the school’ was jointly awarded to head boy Blake Lyons and sports captain James Barlow. School head James Allen said: “The 2024 GCSE Prize Giving evening was a truly joyous event. “The achievements of our pupils are a testament to their resilience and our support, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.” THE King’s School is encouraging applications for its bursary awards scheme, having seen a decline in those applying since the announcement of VAT on school fees. With only weeks to go before applications should be made for next year’s awards, some part and full fee assis- tance packages were still available at the 522-year-old Macclesfield school. Caroline Johnson, King’s director of external rela- tions, said: “The government’s decision to put VAT on inde- pendent school fees has had a major effect on our sector, particularly putting off lower and middle-income families. “However, our bursary awards are designed to ena- ble those families to access the education of their choice for their son or daughter.” “We are proud of the fact that part of our founding mission decreed in the early 16th Century is to offer edu- cation to children from all local families. We are keen to maintain this, and our bur- sary fund is a vital element of helping local children be able to come to King’s.” Bursaries are available at 11+ (Year 7) entry to the Sen- ior School, or at 16+ (Year 12) entry to the Sixth Form. All bursaries are means- tested and are based on both parents’ income and assets. The level of award varies from 10 per cent up to 100 per cent of school fees and is based on two things: parental need and a child’s academic performance in the entrance examinations in January (during Year 6). For Sixth Form bursaries, the school requires a strong academic performance at GCSE. Bursaries can stand alone or supplement an Academic Scholarship or Music Scholarship. At any time, King’s typ- ically has around 50 to 60 pupils in receipt of some bursary support with fees, and many will have full fee remission. In the Sixth Form, bursaries are available funded by donors and each year King’s offers up to five pupils in Year 12 a bursary, which can be up to full fee remission.
